UAB Women's Tennis Team Falls To Middle Tennessee, 6-0

April 13, 2008

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB women's tennis team closed out the regular season with a 6-0 loss to visiting Middle Tennessee Sunday at the Brook Highland Racquet Club.

The Blue Raiders claimed the doubles point with wins at all three positions and then took wins at five singles matches to post the victory.

In the only match that was not completed, UAB's Giorgia Romeo was up 6-2, 5-2 on MTSU's Andrea Herrera when the match was halted.

In singles play, the Blue Raiders' A.K. Siljestrom downed UAB's Evelien Strijker at No. 1 singles, 6-4, 6-4. Stephanie Parkison was a 6-4, 6-3 winner at No. 2 singles over UAB's Gulsah Esen. At the No. 3 spot, MTSU's Claudio Szabo defeated Antonia Nugent, 6-1, 7-5.

UAB's Jenny Cape fell at the No. 5 singles position, losing 6-2, 7-6 (1) to the Blue Raiders' Marlene Chemin. At No. 6 singles, MTSU's Pooja Kommireddi (MT) beat Ceylan Engin (UAB) 6-2, 6-0.

Middle Tennessee had taken a 1-0 lead by winning the doubles point. Chemin and Parkisonbeat UAB's duo of Nugent and Strijker, 8-6, at No. 1 singles. At the No. 2 spot, Szabo and Siljestrom defeated Romeo and Esen of UAB, 8-5. Shannon Hartmann and Kommireddi closed out the doubles play with an 8-3 win over the Blazers' Cape and Seden Soyalp.

"MTSU was clearly the better team today," said UAB head coach Mert Ertunga. "The scores reflect that. I didn't think we played particularly bad, they were just better today. I thought our doubles play was solid and Giorgia continues to play great tennis in the second half of the season."

 

 

The Blazers' record dropped to 9-5 with the loss.

UAB now will prepare for the Conference USA Championships which are set for next weekend at Memphis, Tenn.
